Many organizations are gravely concerned with the recent Supreme Court decision on City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson, which will allow local governments to criminalize homelessness when no other shelter exists. As a provider of Street Outreach, Street Medicine, and Mobile Crisis, we have a front row seat to the destructive impact of living outside and to the harm of having no place to legally exist. In the video, you will meet Anne and Jeanette. When they were served by Street Outreach, they were asked to move over and over again while they were unhoused. Yet if their story took place after July 2024, what would the outcome look like for them? Fines for sleeping outside? Warrants for unpaid fines? Arrest? Jail? The reality our unhoused neighbors are facing is dire.
